Two crashes involving a total of ten vehicles have brought the A12 London bound carriageway to a standstill this morning.
Police have kept one lane open, but motorists are urged to avoid the road entirely.
The first incident between J21 Witham and J20 Hatfield Peverel involved three cars at around 6.25am.
